Internet in Phuket

Last updated: 19 Nov 2011

Oct 2011: 3G (AIS) available everywhere in Phuket. Everywhere Internet access in Phuket with your mobile phone or computer.

Nowadays (July 2011) ADSL is easy to get in Phuket. Even if your house has no landline, 3BB (or a telephone company) can install a line at your house and can deliver ADSL over that line.

Several options to get Internet access in Phuket:
  1. ADSL by landline or cable
  2. CDMA
  3. Satellite
  4. Leased line
  5. GPRS

1. ADSL

Remember that you are NOT in the West, you are in Thailand. Infrastructure is not at the same level as in your country. In 2003 there was hardly no ADSL at all in Phuket. The last years the Thai did a good job to catch up with the ADSL availability around the island. The speed is, on the other hand, sometimes not comparable to the ADSL speeds you are probably used to.

You can get ADSL in your house in at least 3 ways:

a. Traditional normal landline (telephone line)

The house has a landline from a telephone company in Phuket: TOT or TT&T. This landline has a telephone number like 076 892 000.

b. Landline without a telephone number

On request a company can install a landline at your house but the line has no telephone number. You cannot use this line to make phone calls with a traditional phone, but you can get ADSL over this line. 3BB for example can set this up at your house.

c. Cable from Cable TV

Not available everywhere. In Rawai you can get TV and ADSL by Cable over 1 line (1 cable).

2. CDMA

CDMA is a rather new technology. It provides Internet by way of the mobile network. All you need is to buy an "aircard". Connect it to your laptop, or your PC at home, and you can travel anywhere and will have Internet access where the network is available.

What about the speed? In theory it is slower then ADSL but so far we heard many positive things about the speed. CAT telecom in Phuket Town can set it up for you.

3. Satellite

You can get Internet by Satellite (IPStar). The company will put a dish in your garden, so choose a package and you are online.

4. Leased (private) line

Island Technology in Kathu can provide you with broadband all over the island. Check their homepage for prices and details.

5. GPRS

Connect you mobile phone to your PC, call to your network-GPRS-provider (AIS, DTAC, Orange) and you are online. Everywhere where your mobile phone has a signal, you can connect to the Internet.
Not high speed, but country wide. Expect 56K type modem speeds.

Summary.

Nowadays (Aug 2010) ADSL is easy to get in Phuket. Even if your house has no landline, 3BB can install a line at your house and can deliver ADSL over that line.
